A vertical column the periodic table is known as a group. Group 1 contains six very reactive metals.

You might handle lithium and possibly sodium in the laboratory . The other metals in the group are too reactive to handle in a school laboratory.

Similarities between each reaction

  1. each of them reacts with water
  2. each of them gives off large amounts of smoke and gas
  3. each of them stays near the top of the water
differences between them include the size of the explosions and the speed at which they react with the water

the alkali metals all react with water, they produce hydrogen gas and an alkaline solution.
